Fawking Flatlanders!
I hate you. All of you. You live in a place where you can ride. Whenever you want. Bahstuds.
Allow me to show you my reality - the snow bank across the street from my house:
Yeah, it is that big, for real. Another:
OK, so my dog has a thing for crotches. Don't hold it against me, I didn't teach him that.
Damn, I should have been a sledder. Yeah, that's the ticket. It's not like it never snows up here, so I could even steal one, and probably not get caught:
That's the back deck, during one of the recent storms. The 2nd floor deck. The snow is up to about 16' there at the peak. I hate our deck:
The Grizzly Den is off to the right, out of the picture.
I have carefully NOT shown any pictures of how badly my Grizzly Den is buried right about now. I can't bring myself to do it. I can't even bring myself to take any pictures, that's how bad the situation is. Makes my cry like a little sissy boy.
Right about now, I'd trade places with FishHallic. OK, he's got no oil and a $3,000 repair bill hovering over him, but at least he can ride. A little ways, anyway. Until the big seize-yikes-anyone-got-a-tow-strap moment. Hey Fish, I can't think of any other silver lining for your black cloud, so let's have a laugh about it, right?
Now me, on the other hand, I'm going through all my old Physics text books trying to figure out how to build a thermo-nuclear device that melts snow and leaves the houses and peoples standing. I need something like that if I expect to be on the trails before the next Mr. Miyagi Memorial, that is.
Fawking snow.

You seem like a pretty sharp guy. Not only did you apparently take physics at some point during your education, you actually kept the text books.
I'm going to assume that you are referring to college physics. I know there are a lot of pre-reqs that may have limited your ability to enroll in other classes such as geography or meterology. Had you taken those classes, you probably would have learned that snow in Truckee is fairly common, especially in the winter.
Maybe you were partying too much in college. I guess you missed out on hearing about the big party at the Donner House. People are still talking about that one, although I hear the catering sucked.

I don't know if I can feel too sorry for you! Afterall, you know enough people that maybe...just maybe you could find a winter/snow free shelter for your quads. Besides... how many times have you skiied this year??? I've been once!

He, he, he. I know, that was just shameless whining by mountain boy. But I just had to let it out. Fawking snow...
You nailed it, Joe. Many moons of mis-spent youth when I should have been paying attention to the profs spewing forth physics. But no, not I, I had to focus on dashing in and out of train tunnels, riding freight trains to find lesser known redneck bars, and all of that nonsense. Yeah, a class or two in geography or meterology would sure have been handy. But no, I had to learn about meteorology the hard way, later, by trying to fly through thunderstorms in my hang glider. Shitake, had I known what a bad idea that was. I still can't hear the word "Mina" without getting flashbacks of that thunderstorm-infested hole out in NV. Might be a nice place to ride, not a nice place to fly over. Anyhoo...
I hereby certify that I am not 2'3" and Kendo knows it. I think we were looking eye-to-eye out at Verdi Springs, but no way would I challenge him to a wrestling match.
Glad you thought that was funny, Mr. Fish. Now that I think about it a little more... I was wrong, I wouldn't want to trade places with you. Snow bad, but at least I've got oil.
Hey Ken - That could have been YOU being subjected to a water balloon coming from an uphill canon with a 7-second hang time, knocking you flat onto the pavement at Poly Royal '83, while you were drifting to the next party, OK? That's all I'm saying, man. The guys in my dorm room who DID pay attention to physics had that target location locked on with true geek/mathematical/wonderous precision.
Yes Derrick, the Donner folks died and were eaten about 4 miles from here. They tramped up a trail about 100 yards from our dog walk route on the way to their fate. I get all excited when I get to plink a snake and eat him on an overnight ride... but eating people cause you have no other choice? WoW!
Yo Teejay, you're right. But I do make a mean Engdangered Whale Stir-fry. Plink 'em with the carbine, let them drift into the beach, whack a piece off (no blubber, spoils the taste) and run home to the wok. Toss in a few oyster mushrooms, a dab of soy sauce, and... tastes like chicken.
Naw, I'm 100% full of BS on this one, please don't tell the whale dudes. I don't need greenie protesters outside my house keeping me from riding, the fawking snow is doing just fine on that one, thanks.
Hey Lori, if Ken can't off his arse and haul you up high for some skiing, you can always come here solo. No matter how bad the storms get, can always go skiing. Like right out of the back yard, as shown in my Geek Goes Skiing video. So I guess all this fawking snow is good for something, eh? Oh, and the guest bedroom has potpourri and all that other stuff that women like, courtesy of my wife:
This big hole in the wall is no longer there either, so it doesn't get all that cold any more:
Why we had to have that hole in the wall is a long story that only women seem to understand. I was hoping she (my wife) had it put there so I could drive the Grizzlies inside for the winter, but nope, that wasn't it.
Sorry for the long reply, time for me to stop feeling sorry for myself and go get a margarita. Or two. Right?

I know people are itching to go riding in the mountains, so I thought I'd show you some pics of the current snow situation up here at 7100'. The bank along the road has gotten a little smaller:
Back in February:
Driveway now:
Driveway back in January:
A few views from the Grizzly Den now, should give you an idea of average snow pack depth up here. I can't get out this way:
But I might be able to drive get out this way by winching to those trees:
Looking back from the winch anchor trees:
If I can get to those trees, then I should be able to winch over to the trailer (use a car as anchor):
Of course if we get a cold night and I do this early in the morning, maybe just plop a ramp down and ride up onto and across the snow.
Both Grizzlies started right up after solar charging through the winter and they are itching to get out of the den:
