Re: inREACH for Smartphones
It looks cool but is getting lots of poor reviews over on Amazon:

They are using the Iridium satellites instead of the Globalstar ones so I would have expected it to work better than SPOT, but apparently that isn't the case based on the reviews.

that worried me about spot as well, but knowing that i was still very impressed at where i get signal.GrizzlyGuy wrote: They are using the Iridium satellites instead of the Globalstar ones so I would have expected it to work better than SPOT, but apparently that isn't the case based on the reviews.
That makes me wonder though im i impressed since i wasent expecting the best? Like going to a movie people told you it was average or worse and you end up liking or loving it since you wernt expecting much and it was good.
Id love to take my spot on a white water trip, steep canyons, trees, lots of directions changes etc. but there only good for 30 min under water, and havent wanted to chance it. I use to always have my spot on my arm or with a clear view facing up etc. but now i leave it in my backpack and it still reads great, my parents put it under there stereo in a deep slot when they drive to mex and it reads fine. Next white water trip i do ill double / triple wrap it in plastic bags and take it along for a good deep canyon test.
I feel like such a spot cheer leader...but it may suck compared to other options i just haven't tried them yet.

Personal Locator Beacons
So, the reviews on SPOT are still mixed - with non-reception issues, poor customer service etc. A smartphone add-on isn't practical for me, so I started looking into the more general personal locator beacon market. I don't really need the web tracking or cool stuff that SPOT or other smartphone devices can bring, I just want to have a device that can broadcast an SOS if I need it.
Here is what I am thinking of: http://www.acrelectronics.com/products/ ... k-406-gps/
This is from a company that specializes in these kinds of devices. They definitely cost more, but don't have any kind of subscription fee and use satellites that are purposed for this.
