Moab On the Scoot
Hooked up with four friends with Dual Sports for a few days in Moab . Completely different experience on bikes, pretty cool
being able to ride everywhere without having to trailer. After months of waiting we hit the road for Moab. 900 miles later Rich
and I pulled into our home for the week, a nice little 3 bedroom condo on the south side of town with a 2 car garage for night
time storage of the bikes. Crawford from Vegas would be joining us shortly, until then we decided to unload and take a quick
ride up to the Sand Flats area.
The view from the condo garage offered a spectacular view of fresh snow on the La Sals, we'll be up there in a few days!
After several bone jarring miles of Hell's Revenge we make our way out to the overlook along the Colorado River. From there
we jumped on the Slickrock trail and navigated our way back to town to meet Crawford for dinner.

Re: Moab On the Scoot
Day Two we meet Mike from Colorado in town and the four of us ride up to Chicken Corner and out Kane Creek.
We logged 71 miles for the day, between sightseeing and a couple lost sheep it was a good day for all.
After much coaxing and ridicule we manage to get Crawford to take a few steps toward the edge....
of the incredible views of the Colorado River
and surrounding canyon

Re: Moab On the Scoot
Day 3 will be our Big Ride, White Rim Trail in Canyonlands and Long Canyon heading home. This is one of those "Must do rides" but
requires a street legal vehicle, and the park service doesn't allow ATV or UTV's even street legal so it's a bike or passenger vehicle trip.
157 Miles for the day!
Mike and Rich make final preparations as we get to the trail head.
Immediately the trail starts with incredible views of the area
and the Shafer switchbacks.......who decided they could cut a road down that?
Everytime you crest a hill or turn a corner
Something catches your eye and you stop for another picture, oh look... there's Crawford
more sensory overload
Mike and Crawford stretch their legs after grabbing a couple pictures
The scenery is really unbelievable
Everywhere you look there is another picture to take
About 10 miles in we find a side trail that leads to an overlook above the Colorado River
We head out to the overlook for the view and a quick break and wait for Crawford
A couple in their Jeep stops and we have the lady takes our group picture.....less Crawford
Somewhere between the overlook and our last stop Crawford had a run in with a Damn Hippy in a Killer Suburban!
He missed the turn to the overlook and continued on the trail...."Where's Waldo, errr ah Crawford?
We gear up and head out in search of Crawford
Off in the distance we catch a single rider and a trail of dust, we know where he is....
Crawford on the other hand....

Re: Moab On the Scoot
We continue out the trail wondering when we'll rendezvous with Crawford
Hard to worry about him with this kind of scenery happening all around us
Besides, we know where he is and eventually he's going to have to stop
After all, he has the smallest gas tank and we have the extra fuel!
Ahhh.....we've found our lost sheep!
A little further up the trail we find a very scenic canyon
That makes the perfect backdrop for the obligatory DR picture
Scenery Shots and....
Poser group shot and....
The ADV Salute shot for all the hard working men and women that stayed on the job while we were out playing!

Re: Moab On the Scoot
After our reunion with Crawford and Photo Op we continued on toward our lunch stop
A little shade at Murphy's Hogback made a great spot to stop
It's hard to beat the view from the front door of the outhouse up there
Not too bad for a "Point and shoot" camera zoomed out that far!
Realizing we had ground to cover we limited our stops on the back half so we would be back before dark
Plus it's a lot easier to keep track of Crawford when we're moving
After his "Damn Hippy" encounter Crawford promised to stay close to Rich
Which just meant Rich got to ride in Crawford's dust the rest of the day
They have outhouse every 10 miles along the trail, "Navigation by Crapper", my personal favorite!
Jack is a friend of mine that grades the trail every Spring, takes him 9 weeks to get all the way around
Our final climb out to the highway, the trail winds through that section and every turn seemed to be off chamber

Re: Moab On the Scoot
Day Four we wanted to run out Highway 128 along the river and ride up "Top of the World" and spend some time up on Dome Plateau.
20 miles out we got blocked by a Marathon in progress so "plan B" took us up through Castle Valley and into the mountains
Just like the rest of the area scenery along the river is spectacular
Towering Redrock Cliffs front the road
Climbing up from the valley the area offers more panoramic views
Then suddenly we're riding through Aspen Groves in full Fall color
Within a few miles we were above 8000 feet and found Aspens everywhere we looked
A quick right turn and we're back down in Sand Flats rolling through Fins and Things on the Slickrock
Mike takes in the scenery just before he and Rich broke off and went into town for lunch
Crawford and I head back into the mountains then make our way to the "Steel Bender" trail head
After a series of creek crossings
In a very scenic canyon
We come to a larger rock pile in the trail, admitting defeat we retreat
And make our way back to town
The routes all together so Mike, Rich, and Crawford have a better idea where we were
Surviving in Moab is pretty simple, a reliable scoot, lot's of water, a few Advil
And a daily sprinkle of Anti-Monkey Butt powder
Cuz no one really wants to get Monkey Butt....do those pant's match Rich's jacket?
