So, while we are driving up the Stainback Highway (near Hilo, HI), I pass a sign way up the mountain at 4,000 ft elevation that says "ATV Park". I wondered if anyone goes there - it's largely rainforest etc. We reach the end of the highway (it dead ends at the Kulani Honor Camp (e.g.; prison)), and turn around. Just as I am about to get to the ATV turnoff again, 4 quads come ripping out of it onto the pavement and tear off downhill. I was behind them for about 7 miles, then another 3 miles to the highway before they turned off. No helmets, of course... in the driving rain.
Anyway, lava is largely impossible terrain for ATVs but there would be some serious fun roads. You can nearly access the summit of Mauna Loa, until you come to the National Park boundary. I can't hike to 13,000 feet, but getting almost there would be cool (not happening in a rental car...!)

On Hawaii anyway, there were not any places that I could find that flat out rented them - just "activities" where you can be led on a trail ride (might as well be on ponies...) Some of the lava roads (that is like saying "dirt road" here) would be outstanding. I wonder what it would cost to ship our ATVs over for a week... Ha ha!

Nice pics, but I prefer to have the option of having somewhere to run if a huge eruption just happens to start!
Hope you had fun...

I've been told I joke around too much.
So one day I tried being serious.
Everybody laughed!

THere's a lot of island to run around - you could fit all of the other islands on top of Hawai'i with room to spare. There actually are "escape roads" around the park.
'Course, if there was a big eruption I would be right there taking pix...
Yep, it's fun there - I'm less about resorts and all that, I could spend all my time exploring the volcanos... oh well, back to exploring the Tahoe NF.
