Five Mile Pass and mud/water sucked into intake!
Took my brother, sister (her husband) and my niece out to Five Mile Pass yesterday. We stayed on the area to the far North/East of the staging location (because its mostly rocks).
My older brother found a bowl that was about 40' long by 1' deep mud/rain water. What to do? :ne_nau:
Ride through it at speed, of course.
After my brother and brother-in-law went through, I decided to try it. Got a good running start, hit the puddle and about 15' in, heard a pop followed by the machine conking out.
At first, I thought I had blown the CVT belt, but after being towed out of the water, I saw that I had sucked muddy water into the intake.
A few photos from what will probably be yet another expensive repair! Last year, my 2005 Kawi cost $4000 to rebuild the motor. I'm hoping I can just remove the plugs on this 2008 and flush with a bit of oil and gas and not rod/crank/etc damage was done.

Just a quick update (if anybody is reading this or wants to chime in with thoughts):
Ran home today to check & drain the oil. Water definitely got in there. Any chance that I didn't blow a ring or seal?
I am going to go ahead and drain the oil, replace the filter, remove the plugs, put some oil (about 2 table spoons) into the intake (after cleaning it as good as I can) and crank it a few times. I'm hoping anything left in there will shoot out the plug-holes.
Afterward, I'll replace the plugs and turn it over (hopefully it starts), run the motor for a few minutes and then drain the oil again and replace with fresh oil & filter.
I'm hoping that's all it will take. Fingers crossed.

i don't think it is as bad as you think.
i have had two atv's now get sunk due to deep water
we just drained the oil over night let it dry up a bit
and added new oil filters and plugs
we also added some stuff in the fuel tanks that sucks the water up and dry's it out or somthing i cant remember what is i called
i would changed your fuel filter as well
it only takes about 1 cup of water to make an engine stall

You can run Seafoam in both the oil AND gas to conquer any remaining moisture.
Good stuff available pretty much anywhere...you know...WalMart

Oh man, that sucks. I have no mechanical skills so I usually just whip out the sat phone and call 1-800-FIX-MY-QUAD in those kinds of situations...

Woo Hoo! We (my brother and I) may have fixed my machine. We gently (using a Q-Tip), wiped out the intake, put about 6 qts of oil through the machine (and two filters) and its running like new.
I'm fairly certain this 12x12 Bighorn tires (rear) are the cause for how much water was sucked in, so I've taken the Bighorns off for now and gone back to stock rims and the Maxxis Alltracks.
I'll be replacing my rear 12x12 rim/tires with 9x12 (like the front).
But, as of tonight, it looks like my machine won't need to go to the Kawi dealer!
I have Tuesday off, so we're going to do a 100mile loop from 5Mile to Eureka and back.. that will be the tell.

why would rear tires and wheels be the cause of the water getting to
the air box do you not have a drain tube
i am confused.
and another trick go get some nylons cut one end and put it over
the air tube leading in the the intake so if water will go through but no junk.

its not the bighorns.
the brutes are notorious for doing this. I did it in moab in may in 6 inches of water. The problem is the front tires spray water up and into the front of the airbox, then it gets sucked up. If you want to ride a brute in any type of water, you have to snorker it. There are some really good threads about this topic on NYROCATV.com. Or you can buy an airbox lid from EHS and block off the front inlet on the airbox.
