Mina 08 Story time
Posted: Fri Apr 18, 2008 9:50 pm
This should be here now.. as we are riding.
OK Story time. Report from day 1 - NO RIDING. ok so the photos are really from day 2 but who's counting.
We started out from Sac in the morning. Stopped @ Cabelas. Let me say I was underwhelmed. Picked up a couple if bark collars so the neighbors will be happier when I get back home. The dogs are used to living in the boonies and it shows..
Cabelas, so we stop there to initially pick up a few shirts and some elk or bison summer sausage. No shirts my size although they carry over my size in the catalog. oh well no biggie.. on to the summer sausage. NONE - I mean nothing. I ask one of the people I could finally track down, only to find out they don't carry ANY in the store only online..
On to the "grill" I ordered a Bison brat. what i got was a dried up brat on a stale bun that fell apart and half fell on the floor.. OK time to head over to Sportsman's Warehouse in Reno. they had EVERYTHING I was looking for the shirts and the summer sausage. (side note - they have 4 of the old style flat packs left)
Loaded up and ready to head out, I call the "hotel" in Mina, no answer. No answer about 2 days before we left either but this place had always been a bit flaky.
4 hours later we arrive in Mina, we stop at the hotel to find NO ONE, cafe, NO ONE, door locked.. OK getting a little worried now. I jot down the phone numbers and walk across the street and as the person at the gas station. So, you have any idea when they open.. "oh, they closed down around 2 weeks ago, no one there anymore."
Well, now we start to panic a wee bit. We had intended to be staying at the hotel so NO CAMPING GEAR. NO tent, NO bags, NO FOOD.
We tried to see as a maybe if we could find "other" accommodations within the trailer park. nothing available in a hard wall sense...
Not wanting to head back to Sac. and not wanting to trailer everyday from Hawthorne. We dump the trailer and gear in the truck with chuck (hey it rhymes) and head to Fallon. Its 8pm when we finally leave Mina, around 12:30am when we get back from Wallyworld with $200 worth of new gear. And YES this was the cheapest we could get out of there.
So now the adventure begins. Photo time
We start out as always. Time to check out this "blocked" road DAVE was talking about.
We stopped first in Bellville Mine
Not much snow left, but hanging on
I bought one of those backlavas or what ever Ken the man with no hair uses. Great for holding your headphones in, not great for yo Hair.. See DAVE - top of the world MA.
We came down from Pilot and headed south. Wayne wanted to check out the white lake bed in Sodaville -
Having a bit of fun with the tracks
OK, Now back to story time. When we FIRST went to Pilot Peak to have brunch/snack Wayne walked over to the com shack to have some oranges and proceeded to LEAVE HIS CAMERA. So on trip 2. I noticed these in the snow.
Headed back to camp for the evening we found another find product for sale by "Mr.Bill Marine Works.
ONLY ONE OWNER
So now back at camp we find our new tent BENT OVER from the wind. For those of you who remember the first year we went and the "fun" time we had setting up the tent .. Take 2 - so I backed up the redneck tent hauler for a wind block
Now that I have the tent now vertical I was looking for Wayne.. OOO where could Wayne be...
So there ya go folks.. day (1) ok 2 complete. More tomorrow - it's supposed to be windy - yea...
almost forgot.. for those of you thinking about the SPOT .. it's working great. Here is one of the tests..
SPOT Check OK. I'm not dead yet.
